Schism Song Poster

Brief

Choose the lyrics of a song to translate into an expressive typographic composition. The content can either be the whole song or selected phrases. The final format is a poster: 18” x 24”, or another format if it suits the idea. Execute the concept through hand made – drawn, built, photographed or other experimental means.

Concept
I chose the song Schism by TOOL. My interpretation of the lyrics “Finding Beauty in the Dissonance” led me to weaving and interconnecting the printed words. The letters describe the word dissonance and the themes of the song. Using only black and white, the contrasting “entities” of the song are emphasized through the tactile aspect of the construction. The poster is held together only by the interlocking of paper.

The construction process involved weaving two sheets. The first sheet being the base layer had lines cut through the top and bottom of each word. The second sheet being the top layer had strips cut all the way though held together only on one side. The sheets had cuts of the same thickness at the opposite angle of the other. The top layer was then weaved in the corresponding area of the bottom layer.
